NHTSA Launches Campaign to Combat Speeding

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) over 11,000 people were killed in crashes that involved speeding in 2020. This was a 17% increase from 2019. About 25% of drivers 18 to 44 involved in fatal crashes were speeding, and young men were found to be the most likely to be speeding at the time of a fatal crash.
In 2020, it was also found that 35% of male drivers 15-20 and 32% of male drivers 21-24 who were involved in fatal crashes were speeding [1].
Accordingly, NHTSA has launched the Speeding Wrecks Lives campaign, which runs from July 20 to August 14, 2022. The campaign is supported by an $8 million national media buy. The campaign is meant to target drivers 18 to 44 years old, which the data shows are the most likely to be involved in speeding-related fatal crashes [2].
In addition to the data reported, some additional concerning statistics were reported for 2020 [2]:
- Local roads (not interstates) saw the most speeding, with 87% of all speeding-related traffic fatalities occurring on non-interstate roads.
- Speeding contributed to 37% of the fatal crashes in work zones.
- Speeding was a factor in more fatal crashes on wet roads than dry roads.
- Drinking and speeding is the deadliest combination.
NHTSA advises everyone to remember the following when it comes to speeding [1]:
- Speeding reduces your ability to safely steer around vehicles, objects, or curves.
- Speeding extends the time it takes your vehicle to stop.
- Speeding increases your risk of a crash because other vehicles and pedestrians may not be able to judge your distance accurately.
